John rowley, Founder & president

John Rowley is the founder of CounterPoint Messaging, a message, media and digital firm based in Nashville.

His first work was in radio and television in Burlington, Iowa. Since then, Rowley has worked on over 500 political campaigns for Democrats in 47 states – winning 81 percent of his campaigns.  He has worked with candidates from President and governor to city council. Rowley has worked with 20 Members of Congress.

Rowley has provided political analysis on MSNBC, CNBC, CNN, FOX Business, Fox News and NPR.

His firm has won 50 Pollie Awards for excellence in political advertising.  His commercials have been featured on NPR, PBS, CNN, FOX, MSNBC and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.  His firm’s work has been covered by The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post.

For corporate clients, Rowley handles branding, advertising, video production and crisis management.

Maddie Atkinson, Director of client relations

Maddie Atkinson currently works as the Director of Client Relations and Communications for CounterPoint Messaging, where she manages the communication between CounterPoint and its clients on everything from the production of spots to digital campaigns. Her background in press and communications on a mayoral campaign and her previous experience in a digital firm has given her a deeper understanding of how to create the right message for the right medium.

She has previously partnered with over 45 clients to manage their social media ad campaigns and overall digital strategies.

Maddie is from Chattanooga, Tennessee, and graduated from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville with a B.A. in English Literature.

Kati Bumgardner, Vice President of operations

Kati Bumgardner currently serves as Vice President of Operations for CounterPoint Messaging where she acts as a media planner and buyer. Since 2008, Kati has managed over $70 million in media buys in 35 states and over 100 markets. When she isn’t personally placing buys, she also oversees a team of media buyers.

Kati is originally from Central Illinois. She attended Belmont University in Nashville where she majored in Political Science.

Kati lives in Murfreesboro with her husband, their daughter and their retired racing greyhound, Shooter, and cats, Thomas Paine and Bea Arthur.

Alexis Hebert, Account executive

Alexis Hebert comes to Counterpoint Messaging from Louisville, Kentucky where she served as Emerge Kentucky’s Deputy Executive Director. Emerge Kentucky is recruits, trains, and inspires women to run for all levels of political office. Emerge Kentucky is a part of the national network of Emerge America which is currently operating in 24 states and has a 70% win rate.

In her role at Emerge, Hebert was in charge of overseeing the 6 month intensive candidate training program and managing and engaging the state-wide network. She also produced all production, promotional, and press materials. Hebert ran Emerge’s social media channels and created content resulting in significant increase in engagement. 

Hebert also has campaign experience from being a member of the finance staff on the 2016 Democratic Gubernatorial race in Kentucky where she managed the campaign’s finance operation in Greater Louisville and Western Kentucky. The team raised $11.5 million, the most raised by a non-incumbent candidate in state history.

A native of Chapel Hill, NC, Hebert obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Government and French from Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. She currently resides in Nashville.

Adam Dunstone, Strategic Partner

Adam brings campaign management, communications, media and advertising, and voter contact planning skills to CounterPoint Messaging. He has worked on candidate and issue campaigns on local, state, and national levels. Having worked for Vice President Joe Biden, U.S. Senators Michael Bennet and Mark Udall, and multiple Congressional campaigns across the country, Adam brings the skills of campaign management, communications, media and advertising and voter contact planning to CounterPoint Messaging.

Prior to joining CounterPoint Messaging, Adam worked on media and public relations and strategic planning. He worked for a range of causes, including local and statewide ballot measures, international clients, political candidates and multi-state independent expenditure efforts. For clients, Adam executed digital and media strategies, created strategic plans, developed messaging for internal and external communications, and built coalitions to drive a cause to victory. Some highlights included working with the League of Conservation Voters to drive conservation issues in targeted states throughout the country and the passage of Amendment 64 in Colorado.

Before joining the consultant ranks, Adam managed both candidate and issue campaigns. He served as the Field Director for Vice President Joe Biden in Iowa, Deputy Campaign Manager for U.S. Senator Michael Bennet, and Campaign Manager for U.S. Senator Mark Udall, to name a few. Adam holds a degree in Public Administration and Public Policy with a concentration in Economics and History from Michigan State University.

Anne Cates, Producer

Anne Cates is CounterPoint Messaging’s producer.

She has won awards for her work in documentary film and commercial production. 

Anne has produced, managed and edited video for a diverse group of clients, including productions in Italy, Scotland and Uganda.

She graduated Cum Laude with a bachelors’ degree in Applied Arts in Communication, specializing in broadcast TV/radio and advertising/PR.
